Houseboat lullabies drifting through the backwaters of Alleppey

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with a two-night stay on a traditional wooden houseboat built from jackwood and coir ropes. The captain, Shaji, steered us away from the tourist-heavy lake corridors into the narrow, quiet canals of Kuttanad. We passed village children cycling to school along the bunds, women washing clay pots on the steps, and paddy fields sitting below sea level. The onboard chef cooked pearl spot fish (karimeen pollichathu) marinated in crushed ginger, garlic, and shallots, wrapped in banana leaves and roasted over coconut charcoal. Falling asleep to the gentle lapping of backwater waves against the wooden hull was the most peaceful sleep we've had in years.
