Most people think Ooty is crowded, but that's only because they stay around the commercial town center. The Fernwood Estate is tucked away in the upper Nilgiri hills near Lovedale, surrounded by old-growth blue gum eucalyptus trees and terraced tea gardens.
The stone cottage was built in 1912 and features high wooden ceilings, crackling log fireplaces in every bedroom, and an immaculate rose garden. We rode the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train through the tunnels and ravines, bought handmade dark chocolates from an artisan bakery in Coonoor, and spent evenings drinking Nilgiri Frost Tea by the fire.
A masterclass in old-world charm and mountain hospitality.
